What is Motion sickness?
Motion sickness is a very common disturbance of the inner ear in this condition body’s sensory organs send mixed messages to brain that leads to dizziness, Nausea feelings. Generally Motion sickness occurs while travelling in a car, train, plane or bike. Motion sickness is a sensation of wooziness.
In the inner ear(Labyrinth), motion sickness affects the organs of balance and equilibrium and the sense of spatial orientation.
Other names of Motion sickness:
Travel sickness, Stimulation sickness, Kinetosis, Space adaptation syndrome, Seasickness, Airsickness, Carsickness
ICD 10 Codes for Motion sickness
Motion sickness, Initial encounter – T75.3XXA
( Use additional external cause code to identify vehicle or type of motion (Y92.81 – Y93.5) )
Symptoms of Motion sickness
- Cold sweats
- Excessive salivation
- Hyper ventilation
- Loss of appetite
Causes of Motion sickness:
There are various theories to explain the cause of the motion sickness.
Sensory conflict Theory
Complete adequate theory of motion sickness is not presently available but contemporary sensory conflict theory. According to this theory when the mind presents the mind with two incongruous states of motion. Based on this theory the cause of terrestrial motion sickness is the opposite of the cause of space motion sickness. The formes occur when one perceives visually that one’s surroundings are relatively immobile while the vestibular systems reports that one’s body is in motion relative to it’s surroundings.
A variation of the sensory conflict theory is known as neural mismatch, implying occurring between ongoing sensory experience and long term memory rather than between components of the vestibular & visual system.
As when we travel in a bus or any vehicle that vestibular nerve system sends signals to the body in no motion. As the visual system involves that our body can senses that the body is in motion.
Due to neuronal senses mismatching the CTZ(Chemoreceptor trigger zone) trigger is activated. Due to activation of CTZ it involves emesis thus this cause motion sickness.
Dizziness due to Spinning
When one spins and stops suddenly, fluid in the inner ear continues to rotate causing a sense of continued spinning while one’s visuals system no longer detect motion.
- Being aware about triggering conditions and avoid situations that tend to trigger symptoms.
- Reducing sensory input
- Maintaining hydration by drinking more water, eat small meals.
- Adding distractions – Controlling breathing, Listening to music, using Aromatherapy scents such as mint or lavender .
- Avoid smoking while driving.
- Closing eyes with eye mask/ covering mask.
Chamomile tea: Chamomile helps to reducing pain and discomfort of the stomach, Reducing acid secretion and relaxing the stomach.
Licorice Root: Licorice root lozenges helps to sooth stomach pain, protects from stomach irritation and improves digestion.
Raw Ginger: Raw Ginger helps to fight against Nausea and vomiting.
Mint: Peppermint(mint) helps to calm the body and protects from Nausea sensation.
Motion sickness Medicines
Some of the medications are used for motion sickness
- Scopalamine skin patch applied behind the ear at least four hours.
